Bird images have been drifting about my studio for years, working on my subconscious. They have at last found their way into the painted environment, some in flight, defining movement across space, implying the passage of time. Some sitting, waiting, present in time and space.
In this work I use mapmaking as a metaphor to describe interior spaces, a tracing of our lives through sensing and knowing. I am interested in our intuitive awareness of place that is often best visually described through abstraction. These paintings are meant to pose questions about the nature of boundaries, both abstract and literal. The medium for all paintings is acrylic on birch panels, with many layers of paint buried, obscured, revealed.
I attended Maine College of Art, earning a BFA in painting with honors in 2000. I then went to Vermont to receive an MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College of Norwich University in 2003. I live in Freeport, Maine with my husband and two children (who love to run wild through my studio).
