Sailors' Valentine Serving Tray

Picture
Sailors Valentine Serving Tray and the original Sailors'Valentine, Gregg Harper, 2003
Several years ago, Gregg created a Sailors' Valentine entitled "Octopus's Garden" as a gift to Naomi Bradford (lower part of image at left) and another for his parents' 50th wedding anniversary.  A Sailors' Valentine is a form of folk art with it's origins in the 19th century when sailors would collect sea shells on their voyages and, when in port in Barbados, have local artisans create these "gifts" that feature a decorative arrangement of shells in a shadow-box frame.  Sometimes, these would include photos of the sailors (and other friends, etc.) and they would be sent home as a rememberance to their loved ones.

Gregg, working with Cape Cod photographer Bill Clancy and a French lacquerware firm in Vietnam, has designed and produced a Sailor's Valentine Serving Tray (upper part of image at left) based upon his original.  It is 12" in diameter with two hand-holds in beautifully produced black lacquer and the image of his sailors' valentine applied to the serving surface under a coating of clear lacquer.  It is large enough to hold a tea pot and two cups and saucers or a bottle of wine and four glasses.

They're practical and decorative and fit into traditional or contemporary settings.  They retail for $24.00 and can be purchased exclusively at River Street Studio!
